Inside the Works

The customer you already paid for

"I never lost that sale. I lost interest in it. The customer never did."

Every owner has a story like this one, and almost nobody tells it out loud:

A lead comes in. You call once, maybe twice. They don't answer, or they say "still thinking." You get busy. They slip down the list. Six months later you drive past their house and there's a new fence — from somebody else.

You didn't lose that sale to a better price. You stopped showing up before they were ready. That's a different thing, and it's fixable.

The Fortune Is in the Follow-Up

Here's a number most owners never sit with: most leads aren't ready to buy on the first contact. They're busy, they're comparing, they're waiting on a tax return or a storm season. The ones who buy — buy from whoever's still standing there when they're ready.

So the money isn't in the first touch. It's in touches two through six. And almost everybody quits after one. If you give up after one try, you're not selling — you're hoping.

What We Saw This Week

We've been building a follow-up rail for our clients: every lead that asked but didn't book gets a gentle sequence over three weeks:

— Day 1 — a proper hello, from a real person.

— Day 4 — proof: the work, the photos.

— Day 8 — a real review from a real customer.

— Day 12 — a reason to move this month, not someday.

— Day 16 — the owner's direct line.

— Day 21 — one soft close, and then we leave them alone.

And the moment a lead becomes a customer, the whole sequence shuts itself off — because pestering somebody you already sold is its own kind of missed call.

The Challenge

Open the last 20 leads you never answered. Pick the one that stings a little. Send one honest line — "Still thinking about it, or did I lose you?" I'm betting what comes back surprises you.
